Chapter 4
The radiators clicked and gurgled in dark corners, the windows vibrated as the wind passed them, and the main staircase creaked ever so slightly under Nic's booted feet. He doubted a house this old could ever be quiet, even at two in the morning. He stopped on the bottom step and listened. Waited. Nothing was stirring, not even a mouse, and certainly not anything human.
He should be upstairs, asleep. Alone.
Again.
He breathed out between clenched teeth.
After lunch on Tuesday, and the mind-blowing sex that followed, the two of them had settled
into what Nic imagined as normal life. Supposing, of course, that he didn't have to go to work. Gavin had gone out Tuesday evening like he'd said, but he'd been in the bed when Nic woke up. However, Wednesday night the same thing had happened: Gavin excused himself after an early dinner and disappeared. Thursday night was a repeat of Tuesday night. This was Friday night, or Saturday morning if you wanted be picky, and Nic's jaw was starting to hurt from not asking questions, and his head hurt from wondering if he even had any right to ask.
He didn't care that Gavin had parts of his life that didn't involve Nic; that he had other obligations. They were adults and that's how life worked. What he couldn't stand was the idea of being lied to in some essential way, especially by someone he was— well, someone he had feelings for.
Nic slipped on his coat and left through the front doors, watching his breath swirl up in a white cloud as he went down the wide steps. He walked around the house, heading for the garage before he wimped out.
The side door to the garage squeaked as he opened it and stepped inside. The Mercedes gleamed dully in the moonlight streaming in the high windows, and beyond it, the Land Rover was a massive shadow picked out in glints of chrome. Nic stared at them and waited for the sick roil of his stomach to subside.
Where the fuck had Gavin gone? He'd said he was going out, but with both cars here, how the hell far could he get? The freaking driveway was over a half mile long, and the nearest anything was ten miles away. It wasn't like taxis cruised the county roads looking for fares. Who were they going to pick up? Bambi and Thumper heading off to town to sample the nonexistent nightlife? Bears and coyotes off to Wild Turkey Night at the local dive? He hadn't heard a car come up the driveway, and Gavin hadn't, as far as he knew, called a car service to come get him.
Nic went back outside and crossed to the next outbuilding, jamming his hands in his coat pockets. The door was open, and he stifled a sneeze as he crossed the threshold. Once his eyes adjusted, he made out a small tractor thing and a lot of curved, sharp, gardening tools. He should have brought a flashlight.
In any case, Gavin wasn't in here, nobody was, and Nic turned to leave.
